South Korean capital Seoul’s population falls below 9.5 million

The decline of the permanent population of Seoul (based on locals) continued to accelerate, falling below 9.5 million again after falling below the 10 million mark. According to data released by the Ministry of Administration and Security on the 6th, as of the end of May this year, the registered population of Seoul was 9,496,887.

In fact, as early as the end of May 2016, the resident population of Seoul fell below the 10 million mark for the first time, at 9.995 million. But in recent years, the population has continued to decrease, especially after falling below 9.5 million, many people in South Korea are completely disappointed.

Internationally, cities with a population of more than 10 million are called “megacities”. In 2018, a report released by the European Union’s Institute for Integration (GFS) showed that there are 32 megacities with a population of more than 10 million in the world. “Deutsche Welle” also said at the time that Berlin, with a population of more than 3 million, is the capital and largest city in Germany. Compared with other big cities in Europe and Asia, Germany’s “big cities” are simply “mini cities”.

According to Korean media, under the influence of the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, the population from other places poured into Seoul in large numbers, reaching 10.97 million in 1992, and began to decrease after reaching the peak. According to the Seoul Research Institute, the supply of large-scale new housing in the metropolitan area is the main reason for the exodus from Seoul.
